English

In the English department, students follow thematic programmes of learning with a reading or writing focus each half term. Our programmes of learning explore links to the wider world, develop students’ understanding of our literary heritage and expose students to social and historical contexts from around the world. It is our aim that our students develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually through their literary and language studies to become moral citizens and enable them to participate fully in society.

At KS3 our students’ progress in Reading or Writing is assessed half-termly. Students follow a broad and balanced curriculum, while developing the skills required for academic success in future AQA GCSE English Language and English Literature examinations at KS4. At KS4, students’ progress is assessed through AQA GCSE marking criteria.

Reading is the foundation of success in English and enables students to fully access the world around them, including other subject curriculums. Our well-stocked Library is at the heart of our school, looking out over our inspiring South Norfolk landscape. All students have a fortnightly reading lesson in our Library and follow the Accelerated Reader reading programme which enables us to successfully guide, support and monitor our students’ reading skills.
